Google Tag Manager - FAQ

Google Tag Manager is a free tag management system. In other words , a complete solution with which website events and tracking can be implemented dynamically without having to adapt the website source code every time . It offers users a graphical interface in which all tracking pixels can be easily managed.

For the Tag Manager to work, you need the following things:

  1. A Google account
  2. A Google Tag Manager container
  3. 2 GTM code snippets in the source code of the website

Anyone with a Google account can create a Google Tag Manager container. The container contains all pixel & rule definitions for the website.

In order for the GTM to be able to place the pixels dynamically on the website, 2 code snippets must be inserted into the source code. These are loaded and executed when a user visits, and then dynamically load all desired pixels in the container.

The best way to do this is to install the following browser extension . This allows you to see whether the Google Tag Manager is already installed on your site.

Alternatively, you can go to your page and right-click to select "View Page Source". Now you can use the search (CTRL + F) to search for "gtm.js" . If the search hits, the tag manager is built into your site.

The main GTM benefits are:

  1. Google Tag Manager makes the tag/code deployment faster. You don’t have to wait for the IT department to implement some changes (usually), as you can publish new tags by yourself (in most cases).
  2. All tags are controlled in one place.
  3. In addition to the built-in debugging console, you can also use various browser extensions to make the testing process faster and more efficient

No, GTM also supports Android, iOS mobile apps, and AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages).

Again, it depends on what are your goals. If you plan just to track regular Google Analytics pageviews, clicks, scroll tracking and other basic interactions, you’ll be fine without developer’s input.

The more advanced your measurement plan is, the more likely you’ll need to cooperate with developers.

One thing to remember: developers are not your enemies. Be in touch with them, and, if needed, ask them to push some valuable data to the Data Layer (it is also explained in this blog post). Looking for ideas what kind of data that could be?

  • User ID
  • User pricing plan
  • User’s total spend
  • User’s satisfaction (NPS) score, etc.

Are you looking for a Google Tag Manager freelancer?

Now is probably a good time to call for service if:

  • You don’t have Google Tag Manager yet
  • You already have a Google Tag Manager account, however you doubt the configuration of your GTM container.
  • The data is already collected via your Google Tag Manager account but you want to collect more specific data.
  • You lack data and want strategic recommendations for collecting data according to the GDPR of google consent mode .
